William Ewart Gladstone


(29 December 1809 – 19 May 1898) was a British Liberal statesman. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four times (1868–1874, 1880–1885, February-July 1886 and 1892–1894), more than any other person. Gladstone was 84 years old - still physically vigorous albeit with failing hearing and eyesight - when he resigned for the last time, making him Britain's oldest Prime Minister. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times (1853–1855, 1859–1866, 1873–1874, and 1880–1882).


The Matrimonial Causes Act 1857 brought him back. In theory, the State still held marriage to be indissoluble: in practice divorce had long been possible by the expensive and cumbrous method of a private Parliamentary Bill. Practically, the law said one thing and Parliament another; and the proposal now was to create legal facilities and grounds for divorce. In the Quarterly Review for July, 1857, titled

THE BILL OF DIVORCE (pdf pages 64-123)

Gladstone presented a convincing argument for the indissolubility of marriage from Scripture, history and practical policy. He knew it was a hopeless fight, but that made no difference to principle. He was charged with gross inconsistency in drawing a distinction between Church and State, and their respective laws: once again his opponents did not realize that he had outgrown his earlier belief in a Christian state, and had been large-minded enough to change his outlook. The fact stands out boldly as a result of the controversy that Mr. Gladstone believed as firmly in the sanctity of marriage and its indissolubility as he did in any doctrine of the Christian Church. Further, though perhaps he would not have used the phrase, he regarded the State that permitted re-marriage after divorce as apostate from the Christian standard.

Therefore this means:

Any marriage entered into by any man or woman who has a living pre-existing husband or wife,
is considered to be the sin of adultery. It is not a one-flesh covenant marriage.
It must be repented of and forsaken, according to the Scriptures.

Apostle Paul wrote:

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man,

she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law;

so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Romans 7:3 KJV

 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate,

nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous,

nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified

meaning that he was breaking at least one (adultery) of the Ten Commandments (Gods Moral Law).

While the other scriptures (Mar 10:11, 12; Luk 16:18, Rom 7:2, 3; 1Cor 7:11, 39) are very clear on divorce and remarriage to most people Mat 5:32 and Mat 19:9 leave them puzzled. But once you are clear that Mat 19:9 is a exclusion to divorce and Mat 5:32 is a exception to blame not an exception to divorce and remarry it all fits together like a puzzel.
